Lose Weight and Stay in Shape: Healthy Eating Tips for Women Over 40

Published by Pat Mullaly under Staying Healthy

Author: Teresa Cheong

WOMEN over 40 generally find it harder to lose weight and stay in shape. Hormonal changes, plus poor eating habits, accentuate the problems of slower metabolism, thicker waistlines and creeping weight gain.

Though hormonal changes are inevitable for women over 40, there are healthy eating tips which women over 40 could follow to lose weight and stay in shape.

Here are five healthy eating tips for women over 40:

Healthy Eating Tip 1 – Do Not Skip Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is needed to rev up the body’s metabolism (after a night of fast) so it can start burning calories at the next meal. Skip breakfast – and the body’s metabolism slows down throughout the day; thus, burning less calories and making it harder to lose weight and stay in shape.

No matter how busy you are preparing breakfast for the kids or family, do not skip breakfast. Grab a fruit if you are in a hurry.

Healthy Eating Tip 2 – Cut Down On Sodas And Sugary Drinks

Families eating out often end up in fast-food joints because of the children’s clamoring for fries and soda.

Soda drinking is bad for women over 40 who want to lose weight and stay in shape because of its very high sugar content (there are 10 teaspoons of sugar in one ounce of soda!) Continue Reading »

Environmentally Friendly Cars – De-mystifying the Hybrid Cars

Author: Joey Lee

You keep hearing the term Hybrid Cars lately and been wondering what they are. Here is a list of selected Hybrid car facts that hopefully explains what hybrid cars are:

They are not Sci-fi Sounding cars of Hollywood, but some Celebrities do own them. In light of the ever-rising gasoline fuel cost, car manufacturers have started innovating on Hybrid Cars. And No, hybrid cars are certainly not cars which spring from Sci-Fi movies, but in real life where consumers like you and me have started to be become more aware of.

Even A-List Hollywood Celebrities with the likes of Bard Pitt, Leonardo Di Caprio, Tom Hanks, Jack Nicholson, Cameron Diaz, Alicia Silverstone own at least one of Hybrid car in their garages..

Less Power But Much More Miles Per Gallon Hybrid cars are believed to typically produce less power. To compensate for this, they are designed and made very light weight. This is also why their aerodynamic characteristics are more prevalent, intended to cut down on drag and wind resistance as well as noise.

Achieves Average of 50 mpg. Hybrid Cars enjoy excellent fuel economy with the 2009 models promising an average of 50 mpg or miles per gallon. Thanks to the constant development of the Hybrid car technology, the mpg achievement has begun to raise eyebrows amongst the most staunch owners of conventional cars.

So What is the Parallel hybrid? Simply put, a parallel hybrid car is one which uses both a fuel tank with gasoline and a set of batteries. Both the engine and the electric motor can turn the transmission simultaneously. The fuel tank and the gas engine connect to the transmission and the batteries and electric motor connect to the transmission separately.

And What is the Series Hybrids? The series Hybrid car has a gasoline engine turns a generator, and the generator either charges the batteries or powers the electric motor that is used to turn the transmission. The gasoline engine is not used to power the vehicle directly. However, all the components eventually connect with the transmission to run the Hybrid engine. Lower Fuel Emissions help to curb the infamous “Greenhouse Effect”, saves the ozone and atmosphere, giving us cleaner air and better environment for our children to breathe and live in.

Truly, The Clever, Cleaner, Comfy Car – The Hybrid. Hybrid Cars are eco-smart, as comfortable as a conventional one and environmentally friendly, in a class of its own, achieving fuel economy, Reduced emissions and hence less pollution, slower depreciation, great savings and more tax rebates, and ultimately causing less reliance on fossil fuels in the future.

Midlife: Taking Responsibility for Your Own Happiness

Published by Pat Mullaly under Current News

Midlifers? It’s more than time to determine how the rest of your life is going to go. In the beginning, the early years, circumstances dictate so much of our lives. Where we live, how healthy we are, educational opportunities, friends, etc. The world is small. And then, we grow beyond the small world of early childhood and into those awful teen years where stretching and testing every boundary is just a natural part of growing up. The 20s and 30s are bigger. Edges blur and we are eager to try just about anything, go anywhere, test the waters.

For most of us, the circle begins to stabalize at this point: spouse, partner, work, children, home, we set down roots and settle in to some spot. For some, the roots get ripped up soon enough, the business fails, the partner moves on to someone else, the children grow and leave. Even if the roots are still growing deep as the years pass, the ground is sure to shift. And everything that seemed so stable, begins to rattle a little. Even our knees begin to squeak.

The key to happiness in midlife is to find it in yourself: It’s your choice. Take responsiblity for making it happen for yourself. Don’t look outside to work, though that can be satisfying, or a partner, though that can be fulfilling. It’s more of developing an attitude of expectation and optimism. Things are getting better. Every day. Say it. Outloud.

Saying it outloud-even you are the only one who hears your voice, makes happiness possible. It does. You are responsible for your own happiness.

So, is my name Pollyanna?

Olive Oil — Who’s Cheatin’ Who?

Published by Pat Mullaly under Food

Author: Kelly Martinez

One fancy bottle is labeled as ‘extra virgin olive oil’ and carries a price tag of $37.50 for one half liter. On the shelf below is another bottle – also labeled as ‘extra virgin olive oil’ but its price is $37.88 for three liters – twelve times more product for the same price.

How is it possible for two products of equal quality to sell for such disparate pricing? The answer is simple: It is not possible. When was the last time you saw one egg selling for the same price as a dozen eggs?

Who in their right mind would pay thirty-seven dollars for a half-liter bottle of a product when a three liter bottle of the exact same product, that is its exact equal in quality, is available just a few inches away? Continue Reading »
