Although I knew plastic waste was a problem, the "Great Vortex" was news to me. What's truly heartbreaking is that it's now progressed beyond the point at which we could hope to fix it. These days it seems like other environmental threats are headed in the same direction at an accelerating pace. Before long, we won't be able to slow the iceberg melt, the widening ozone hole, or global warming. We were warned for years and did nothing. We're still largely doing nothing.
